Propane Autogas is the common name for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) when it is used as a fuel in internal combustion engines in vehicles as well as in stationary applications such as generators. It is a mixture of propane and butane.
Propane Autogas is a by product of natural gas and petroleum, occurring naturally during domestic oil refining and natural gas processing. It is 270 times more compact as a liquid than as a gas, making propane highly economical to store and transport. Propane is also known as liquefied petroleum gas (LPG or LP gas) and when propane is used as an on-road engine fuel, it is called propane autogas.
Propane Autogas is widely used as a “green” fuel, as it decreases exhaust emissions. In particular, it reduces CO2 emissions by around 35% compared to gasoline. One litre of gasoline produces 2.3 kg of CO2 when burnt, whereas the equivalent amount of autogas produces only 1.5 kg of CO2 when burnt. It has an octane rating of 105 and an energy content (higher heating value—HHV) that is between 25.5 megajoules per litre (for pure propane) and 28.7 megajoules per litre (for pure butane) depending upon the actual fuel composition.
Propane Autogas is becoming an attractive fuel alternative in the United States due to its lower cost and drastic reduction in harmful emissions associated with gasoline and diesel fuels. The popularity of Propane Autogas use is also due to State and Federal tax credits and incentives.
Worldwide Usage of Propane Autogas
Worldwide there are more than 21 million vehicles using Propane Autogas making it the third most common engine fuel behind gasoline and diesel fuel. In the U.S. Propane Autogas fuels about 270,000 vehicles with over 2,800 autogas fueling stations found across the United States.
